Reps. Kind, Kelly Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Lower Costs for Fitness and Health Expenses for Families

Wisconsin – Today, U.S. Reps. Ron Kind (D-WI) and Mike Kelly (R-PA) introduced the bipartisan the Personal Health Investment Today (PHIT) Act, a bipartisan bill that will make it more affordable for people to invest in their health by allowing them to use pre-tax benefits to help cover the cost of preventative fitness expenditures.

“We know that the best preventative medicine is staying active, and that physical exercise is especially important for our kids and teens. By making it more affordable for Wisconsin families to participate in regular physical activities, we can give them the tools they need to develop a healthy fitness routine that makes their bodies and minds stronger,” said Rep. Ron Kind.

“Physical fitness for America’s children is one of the best ways to build a healthy lifestyle and prevent future health expenses. It makes sense to let Americans use pre-tax medical accounts for this purpose. Not only will this change make it more affordable for parents to put their kids into youth sports programs, it’s also a crucial investment in our future collective health. We should encourage healthy choices, and the PHIT Act will do just that,” said Rep. Mike Kelly.

The PHIT Act changes current federal tax law to allow for the use of pre-tax dollars in an individual Health Savings Account to cover expenses related to organized individual and team sports, fitness and exercise, recreation and other physical activities.
