Rep. Ron Kind Votes to Protect Wisconsinites from Partisan Attacks on Health Care

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Rep. Ron Kind voted in support of the Protecting Americans with Pre-Existing Conditions Act, which will block a Trump Administration policy that allows states to sell insurance plans that do not cover pre-existing conditions and undermine patient protections under the Affordable Care Act.

Rep. Kind’s statement is below:

“Today, I voted to protect Wisconsin families and consumers from deceptive junk insurance plans that can deny health care coverage to Wisconsinites with pre-existing conditions,” said Rep. Ron Kind. “We must continue to ensure every Wisconsinite continues to have access to quality, affordable health care.”

Unlike Affordable Care Act insurance plans, junk insurance plans can deny coverage or charge higher premiums for people living with a pre-existing condition. Junk insurance plans also destabilize the market and raise premiums for people utilizing Affordable Care Act plans by removing young, healthy people from the insurance pool.

The Affordable Care Act has provided critical protections for the nearly 2,500,000 people in Wisconsin living with pre-existing conditions. Supporters of the Protecting Americans with Pre-Existing Conditions Act include American Lung Association, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the American Medical Association, the Federation of American Hospitals, the AARP, the American Hospital Association, and the American Psychiatric Association.
