Expanding Healthcare for Kids, February 5, 2009
Today I joined a majority of my colleagues in the House to send President Obama an expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), which funds BadgerCare in Wisconsin. We have been trying to get this important legislation passed for a long time, and so I was especially proud to be able to attend the White House ceremony where President Obama signed this bill into law.
By renewing and improving SCHIP, the bill will provide healthcare coverage for 11 million children nationwide – including 4 million uninsured children who are currently eligible for coverage, but not enrolled. While Wisconsin is already a leader in providing healthcare coverage for kids, this bill will allow us to do even more. In these tough economic times, expanding SCHIP is not only the right thing to do for our kids and families, it will promote preventive care and over the long-run lower healthcare costs for everyone.
